Making the World a Better Place; Support Cancer Warriors today! April 23, 2007

I’m not like some of my friends who have really dedicated their lives to make the world a better place. I have some friends who joined the JVP (Jesuit Volunteers Philippines) – they actually spent a year of their lives in far-flung areas. I have friends who consciously chose NGOs over money-making corporations. I may not be like them, but I still have that urge to make the world a better place, somehow, in my own little way. Don’t we all have that urge?

I used to volunteer a lot and join outreach projects – that was my little way of helping out. At that time I was able to give some of my time. I lost that somehow, but still tried to maintain something, in the form of yearly donations to Mads’ baby, Jesus Loves The Little Children Foundation. Not enough, I know, but it’s still something.

And now I’m really happy because I’ve thought of a mini-project for me and my officemates. As a background, I really do believe in the messages of the Lance Armstrong Foundation – that knowledge is power, and attitude is everything. That we should all LIVESTRONG. It’s a bit disappointing that they’re not expanding to other countries, but at least their message continues to inspire many people, even those outside the United States. Just recently I ordered the Livestrong Survivorship notebook and gave it to my friend, who has a brother fighting cancer. It’s something he can refer to, and draw strength from somehow. I believe in the LAF’s thrust – research. I believe that this will go a long way, and will benefit many people, even those from other countries.

Sometime last year, I was inspired by an ETC ad about the Cancer Warriors. It’s a local foundation, founded by a fellow Atenean, who’s a cancer survivor. His name is James Auste, and after surviving brain cancer he vowed to dedicate his life to fighting cancer. That’s how the Cancer Warriors Foundation was born. I’ve been a member of the mailing list for several months now. I’ve been wanting to join activities, which unfortunately almost always fall on weekdays. I really do want to help, and just last weekend, I was inspired to text my Globe friends and ask them if they were interested in “adopting” a Cancer Warrior child. James posts lists of children with cancer with their required medicines and treatments, with all the rates. Most of the cancers are curable, except that the families cannot afford the necessary medicines and treatments.

And so the barkada adoption idea was born. I’ve contacted James already, hopefully we can work together on more ideas and projects. Talk to your barkada, your officemates, and if this is something you’d like to do, send me a message so we can discuss it offline.

Don’t you think that world will be a better place if you can save the life of even just one child? That would really be awesome!

Biking March 4, 2007

Yes, I have started to bike. It wasn’t really a decision I consciously made. Jovan bought a bike at a cheap price. He had 2 options for the bike – I could use it if I wanted to (the GIANT frame was perfect for me at 14 inches), or he could sell the parts. Well, I figured that I should know how to bike if I’m a real fan of the sport. I started 3 weeks ago and I’m actually enjoying it! Jovan changed some parts – he changed the handlebar to a riser bar, he got a gel cover for the seat, and he changed the pedals to platform pedals. Since I don’t have a helmet yet, I refuse to go far, so I just go around the Ateneo high school parking lot. I started with a distance of 2.5km, but tonight I biked 4km! Cool! I really should get a helmet…

One of my goals is to join the Ride for the Roses or a LiveSTRONG challenge in the US. The only problem will be the money (since you have to raise at least $2,500 to be able to join – gulp!).

LiveSTRONG

This is the tagline of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Lance Armstrong, 7-time Tour de France Champion, cancer-survivor. I’ve been wearing the LiveSTRONG band for more than 2 years now – as I’ve said before, it’s not a fad to me. I have found new meaning in the tagline, thanks to the wonderful song of Wideawake, entitled “Maybe Tonight, Maybe Tomorrow”. I posted video and the lyrics a couple of weeks ago, and if you listen to it carefully, you’ll realize that it’s a message for everyone who’s going through a really tough time, for whatever reason.

Things happen for a reason. This too, shall pass. This will only make me stronger. All cliches, but all so true.

I can do this. With the help of real, true, friends, who are always there. With the help of family who will never, ever leave me alone. By the grace of God. I will LiveSTRONG.

I have found the perfect song.

Maybe Tonight, Maybe Tomorrow
by Wideawake

I heard the news today. It came out of nowhere.
I wish I could run away, but where would I go?
Is this my destiny? Something so unfair…
What will become of me? God only knows.

And they say the road to heaven… it might lead us back through hell.

Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, we’ll win this fight and bury this sorrow.
We’re so alive, still holding on, not ready to die, so we LIVESTRONG.

My pride is left for dead, as my world gets shaken.
The thoughts inside my head are so hard to control.
I’m staring down the unknown, one thing for certain.
It may break my body, but never break my soul.

They say the road to heaven it might leads us back through hell, so we’re holding on for more than stories to tell. Oh…

Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, we’ll win this fight and bury this sorrow.
We’re so alive, still holding on, not ready to die, so we LIVESTRONG.
We LIVESTRONG.

Our Live Strong bands arrived last friday. I am proud to say that I now WEAR YELLOW. I support Nike and the Lance Armstrong Foundation in their quest to raise $5 million for cancer patients around the world.
